Abstract
We report a case series of guidewire related complications post Central venous cannulation (CVC) namely cardiac arrhythmia, catheter malposition and guidewire retention. CVC is a common bedside procedure that is frequently performed in critically ill patients. CVC are widely used for anything from rapid fluid resuscitation, to drug administration, to parenteral nutrition, and even for administering hemodialysis. Sometimes their use can be associated with complications as well. Methodological inaccuracy, anatomical variation, and inter-operator variability predisposes to catheter misplacement. Furthermore, the procedure should be performed with ultrasound guidance and cardiac monitoring to minimize complications. All these complications can have a significant impact on healthcare burden in cost, patient’s morbidity, length of stay, quality of life and even mortality. It is important for all related personnel to be able to recognise and manage these complications. This case series intended to highlight that care should be upheld throughout the procedure to prevent complications. Prevention is always better then cure.
